Electricians
People carrying out electrical work in homes must follow the safety rules in the Building Regulations – Approved Document P.
If you are carrying out new electrical work it is strongly recommended that you employ an electrician who is registered under a Competent Persons scheme.
Benefits of using Electricians registered with Competent Persons Schemes:
• Members of schemes can deal with all the rules for you.
• Members are qualified to carry out electrical work.
• Members will give you a certificate to confirm their work follows the rules.
• You will not have to pay Building Control charges.
• You will have the option of taking out an insurance backed guarantee or the work.
• You will have access to a formal complaints procedure if you are not happy with the work.
There are currently five full scope schemes in operation where members can carry out any electrical work:
• BRE Certification Ltd
• British Standards Institution
• ELECSA Limited
• NAPIT Certification Limited
• NICEIC Certification Services Ltd
There are also five further defined scope schemes for other trades who can carry out a limited amount of electrical work (e.g. Gas fitters, kitchen fitters, alarm installers):
• CORGI Services Limited
• ELECSA Limited
• NAPIT Certification Limited
• NICEIC Certification Services Ltd
• OFTEC (Oil Firing Technical Association)
